Clarence Russell Hokinson was born on August 8, 1906, at Clarion, Iowa, to Hans and Johanna Matson Hokinson. He was raised in the Clarion area and attended school there. On February 25, 1939, he was united in marriage to Violet J. Martin at Clarion. He farmed all of his life in the Clarion area and also operated a dragline and gravel hauling business for many years. He was well-known by the area farmers for his welding and repair work. He was a salesman for the Crowe's Seed Company. After retirement, he collected and restored gas and steam engines. He also repaired and sold used lawn mowers.
He was a member of the Historical Society in Clarion and assisted in the restoration of the Clarion Depot. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau, Board of Directors for the REC and the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, where he served as both a Deacon and Elder.
Clarence R. Hokinson died Wednesday, November 8, 2000, at the age of 94. He is survived by his three children: Jim Hokinson, and wife, Valinda, Lake Oswego, Ore., Bonnie Renda, and husband, Vic, Des Moines, Iowa, and Pat Renda, and husband, Ralph, Des Moines; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet, on November 8, 1976; one brother, Henry Hokinson, and one sister, Esther Stevens.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 11, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Clarion with the Reverend Candace Adams of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Willim Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of arrangements.
