Francis Jerome Mentzer was born on November 21, 1899, the son of William and Catherine McGowan Mentzer, at Cabery, Ill. At a young age, he moved with his family to Eagle Grove, where he attended the Sacred Heart School. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1917. He was united in marriage to Nina Northrup of Eagle Grove on August 16, 1919, at Eagle Grove. The couple raised four children before the death of his wife in 1962. He later married Alice O'Toole Albrecht of Eagle Grove on October 5, 1963. The two made their home in Eagle Grove.

He was a depot agent for the Chicago Great-Western Railroad. His work took him to several areas that started in Eagle Grove, and included Moorland, Manning, Harlan, Clarion, and back to Eagle Grove. He retired in 1978. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the V.F.W.

Francis Jerome Mentzer died at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove on February 19, 1991, at the age of 91 years, two months, and 28 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maye Mentzer Ramer; three brothers, Ed, Royce and Oliver; one son, Paul, and a grandson, James Smith. He is survived by his wife; son, Roger Mentzer, Clarion; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Heuton, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Robert (Helen) Smith, Omaha, Neb.; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Mentzer of Sunrise Beach, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on February 19 at, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
