Howard Edwin Norem, son of Jonas and Anna Peterson Norem was born near Thor on June 9, 1926. He was baptized and confirmed at Ullensvang Lutheran Church at Thor. He attended the rural schools and graduated from the Thor High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. After his training, he served in the Air Corp. Communication Service in Greenland for the remainder of World War II.

On returning from the service he attended Eagle Grove Junior College and continued his education at Drake University in Des Moines where he received his degree. On Aug. 29, 1948, he married Laverta Rengstorf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Rengstorf, formerly of Eagle Grove. They lived in Des Moines several years where Howard was employed by Travelers Insurance. In 1971 he and his family moved to Orange, Calif, where he also worked in the insurance field. He died on Sept. 2 at the age of 57 in an Orange County hospital after being in failing health for some time.

He is survived by his wife, Laverta and daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Gary Easly; two sisters, Eleanor Schulze of Orange, Calif.; Iona, Mrs. Emil Ekstrom of Eagle Grove and a brother, Jay Norem of Houston, Tex.

Memorial services were held at the Orange Lutheran Church where he and his family were members. Pastor Eldon Rengstorf of the New York area officiated.
