Evan Duane Benton, the son of Earl E. and Nellie P. (Paulson) Benton, was born on December 10, 1926, in Dows, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. He served his country during World War II, 1945 to 1946, in Korea. His active service in the United States Army was decorated with an Asiatic--Pacific Service Medal, a Victory Medal, and an Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).

He was united in marriage with Shirley A. Russell on June 26, 1948, in Eagle Grove, where they have made their home for 55 years. He worked for Power Pro as a mechanic and shop foreman, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed restoring old tractors and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Eagle Grove; children: James Michael Benton, and wife, Sue, of Iowa City, Steve Benton, and wife, Nancy, of West Des Moines, Rose Lake of Iowa City, and Deb Bowden of Humboldt; sisters, Louise Russell of Eagle Grove, and Linda Oberhelman of Missouri; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Mr. Benton died on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 76 years. Preceding him in death are his parents; brother, Myron; sister, Myrna; and niece, Lorraine.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday (today), July 23, 10:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice Of Wright County.
