Anna Olena Kvale, the daughter of Aanen and Ragnhild Knutsen Olson, was born on Sept. 29, 1898 in Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norway. As a young lady in 1915, she came to the United States. On Sept. 8, 1918, she was united in marriage with Helmik A. Kvale at Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Holmes and to this union were born five children: Leslie, Clarise, Harold, Kenneth and Norman. Anna and Helmik farmed in the Holmes and Eagle Grove area until 1955, when they retired and moved to Eagle Grove. Mr. Kvale died on August 17, 1969. She continued to live in the family home and loved to garden and was known for the beautiful moss roses she grew. About a month ago, she suffered a broken hip and was taken to the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge where she died Friday morning, June 6, 1986 at the age of 87 years, eight months and seven days. She was a long-time member of the Holmes Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Ladies Mission Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Clarise, Mrs. Andrew Johnson of Wells, Minn.; three sons, Harold of rural Thor, Kenneth of rural Eagle Grove, and Norman of Goodell; a daughter-in-law, Lucille Kvale of Goldfield; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Helmik; a son, Leslie; a step-grandchild; an infant sister; three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Olena Kvale, 87, of Eagle Grove, were held Monday, June 9, 1986 at 2 p.m. at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Carlton Shaw, church pastor officiated and burial was in the Holmes Lutheran Cemetery near Holmes. Visitation was held on Sunday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
