Victor Charles Gilroy was born June 29, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of William George and Audry Olive Smith-Kelley Gilroy. He grew up in the Jefferson area and attended school there. After leaving school, he worked in the Five-Spot Cafe and the Gordon Cafe in Jefferson. On December 9, 1940, he was united in marriage to Shirley Eloise Fink in Rockwell City. He entered the United States Navy on August 2, 1942, and served over three years during World War II as a cook and baker. He was Honorably Discharged on November 11, 1945. The couple moved to Colfax after his tour of duty was over. They lived in several locations where he worked for United Foods, Safeway, and Fareway Stores. During the middle 1960s, they moved to Eagle Grove where they owned and operated a restaurant for several years. They moved to Perry in the early 1970s and he worked for Kirby Oil and later did road maintenance for the DOT. In 1985, they retired to Augusta, Georgia. They returned to Perry on March 15, 1988.

His wife died on November 2, 1994, and he continued to make his home in their apartment. He entered the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry on July 9, 1996.

They were past members of the Good Sam Camping Club. He was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post #85 in Perry.

Victory Charles Gilroy died Monday, July 15, 1996 at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, Iowa, at the age of 74 years and 16 days. Survivors include two sons, Stephen Gilroy, Grovetown, Georgia, and Dennis Gilroy, Waterloo, Iowa, three grandsons; one brother. Merle Gilroy and wife, Juanita, Jefferson; two sisters-in-law, Vada Gilroy, Jefferson, and Lee Fink, Tacoma, Washington; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Shirley, and son Gary at age three years in 1946. His daughter-in-law Leashia Gilroy in 1981 [1984]; and one brother Bill Gilroy.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 18, 1996, at 10 a.m. at the Hastings Funeral Home, Perry, Iowa, with the Reverend Alice Bolen of the First Christian Church, Perry, officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa. Hastings Funeral Home of Perry was in charge of arrangements.
