Lyle G. Tilghman was born on September 18, 1916 at Williams, Iowa, to Harry K. and Stella Mae Boyington Tilghman He attended schools in Williams and on February 20, 1949, he married Mary Jane Hammond at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. They lived south of Goldfield on a farm for one year then moved to Hardy. They moved to a farm near Williams for three years before moving to a farm south of Blairsburg for five years. In 1960 they moved to Eagle Grove. He farmed for eighteen years, worked for Jacobson Construction for one year, the City of Eagle Grove for eighteen months, was a drywaller for Art Manuel for eight years, and then became self-employed as a drywaller and mowed several lawns for nine years.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Eagle Grove and was the current president of the Eagle Grove Saddle Club. He received the Governor's Volunteer Service Award in 1991. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II and was in combat in Italy where he was wounded and he received a Purple Heart.
Lyle G. Tilghman died Sunday, July 14, 1996 at his home at the age of 79. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane, one son, Dan Tilghman. Eagle Grove, one sister, Kathryn Gardalen, Denver, Colorado, two brothers, Thomas Tilghman, Tennessee, and Robert Tilghman, Little Canada, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jeanette Otteros; two brothers, Charles and Russell Tilghman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Eagle Grove. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
