Yields to relentless attack of tuberculosis after two year fight

Arthur Christensen died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Christensen, on North Montgomery street, Monday evening at nine o'clock. He had been fighting tuberculosis of the lungs for the past two and one-half years. Two years ago last March he was forced to abandon his work as linotype operator in the Eagle office and seek a different climate. He went to Albuquerque, N. M., and for a time it was thought the climate and complete rest and relaxation were working out a cure. He came home last summer for a few weeks' visit and returned to Albuquerque in the early fall. He remained in the Methodist Sanitarium there for over six months, returning home in the spring when all hope for a cure was abandoned by the hospital doctors. “Art", as he was known by all his acquaintances, learned the printer's trade in the Eagle office and has been employed here off and on since 1914. In 1916 he went to Arnold, Neb., where he was employed on a newspaper, and from there spent several months in a shop at Dakota City, Neb. In that city he completed learning the lintoype and returned to a regular position on the Eagle again in 1918 and he remained here until his health failed in the spring of 1920.

He is survived by his father and mother, one brother, Nellard, and two sisters, Mrs. D. C. France of Chicago, and Miss Nellie, who lives at home with her parents. Art was a fast, clean operator and a congenial associate and every member of the Eagle force feels a keen personal loss in his passing. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon. The Eagle office will be closed during the funeral that all may attend the services. The sincere sympathy of all is extended the remaining relatives in the hour of their great sorrow.

***
Arthur Christensen was born at Jewell, Iowa, February 29, 1897. He died at the home of his parents on N Montgomery avenue, Monday, August 7, after a long and patient struggle with tuberculosis, lasting nearly three years. He spent the past two years and a half in Albuquerque, N. Mexico, hoping the high altitude and warm dry climate might prove beneficial. All efforts proved unavailing and on the advice of the sanitarium doctors he returned to his home here last spring. Every possible effort was made to make his last months on earth as comfortable as the nature of his ailment would permit.

The deceased is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Christensen, by two sisters and one brother. He learned the printer's trade in the Eagle office and later learned to operate the linotype, becoming a very rapid, clean operator. Errors in his work were rare and easily corrected.

He was a devout member of the United Lutheran church, the funeral being conducted from the East Side Lutheran church last Thursday afternoon, and interment at Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. H. C. Holm preached the funeral sermon in the absence of the regular pastor, Rev. Severtson. The Lutheran choir furnished the music, and the pallbearers were former associates of the deceased.
There is universal sorrow over the passing of this young man. A career which promised much usefulness has been brought to a sudden close. The sincere sympathy of all is extended to the stricken family.
