October 10, 1947 ---- July 19, 2019

Larry W. Suntken, 71, Belmond, died July 19, 2019 at MercyOne-North Iowa Hospice in Mason City. Services were held July 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Larry Wayne, the son of Marvin and Ellen (Swenson) Suntken, was born Oct. 10, 1947 in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1965. During his adolescent years he was active in scouting.

Larry married Marilyn Pals on Nov. 12, 1967 at St. John Lutheran in Belmond. The couple made their home and raised son Scott in Belmond.

Larry spent his entire 44-year career working for the Iowa Department of Transportation. His main role was Party Chief. He retired in 2010.

Larry truly loved the simple pleasures of life, spending time with Marilyn, Scott, family and friends. He had a passion for the outdoors and took annual fishing trips with Marilyn and other friends to Abram Lake at Sioux Look Out, Ontario, Canada, and other destinations. He enjoyed frosty mornings running trap lines, harvesting fox, mink, muskrat, raccoon, coyote and beaver. Larry also looked forward to spending time with Scott in pursuit of pheasant, waterfowl, and deer. Larry had accumulated an extensive collection of decoys, guns, and other memorabilia.

Larry also enjoyed woodworking, watching old westerns, classic country, and all kinds of reading. He loved to cook and was a master on the grill. Larry was a Chicago Cubs fan and had attended a few games. He had also enjoyed the companionship of his four-legged side kick “Doc”.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his mother- and father-in-law Dick (D.L.) and Margaret (Kalkwarf) Pals; sister Bobbi Tulare; and brothers-in-law Keith O. Pals and Eldon Pals. Larry’s memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his wife Marilyn; son Scott Suntken of Mason City; sisters Vicki (Glenn) Box of Rowan and Suzanne (Don) Mourlam of Belmond; and other relatives.
