Resident of Wright County for 40 Years and of City 17 years. Died Saturday, August 22nd.

Mrs. J. Y. McCormick died at her home in this city Saturday morning, August 22nd, after a lingering illness which she bore with fortitude and courage. Mrs. McCormick, with her husband, moved from their farm home east of Eagle Grove to the city in 1919. They settled on their farm southeast of Eagle Grove in 1896.

Obituary

Laura Belle Murphey, oldest daughter of Hiram and Isabelle Murphey, was born Jan. 29, 1856, in Indiana, and died at her home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Saturday morning, Aug. 22, 1936. She was the oldest of nine children, her parents, two sisters, and two brothers preceding her in death.

She was united in marriage with J. Y. McCormick at Butler, Mo., on Feb. 17, 1873. To them were born eight children, five of whom survive her. After their marriage they resided in Missouri for several years, later moving to Illinois. In the spring of 1896 the family moved to Eagle Grove where they settled on a farm. In 1919 they moved to their present home in Eagle Grove where they have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. McCormick enjoyed a happy wedded life for nearly 55 years, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary a few years before his death. Mr. McCormick passed away on Jan. 4, 1929. Since that time she has lived alone with the exception of brief intervals when some of the children have resided with her.

In early young womanhood she was baptized and received into membership of the Baptist church in Missouri. On account of poor health she was unable to attend services in her later years.

She was a kind and loving mother who attended well to the ways of her household. Her only daughter, Mrs. Grace M. Watkins, tenderly cared for her throughout her last sickness.

She is survived by five children, four sons and one daughter, Alfred H. of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. Grace M. Watkins of Eagle Grove, Elmer E. of Hampton, Iowa, Fred R. of Elmore, Minn., and Eugene H. of Eagle Grove. Sarah and Harley died in infancy and John L. died in 1934. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Samuel Murphey of Ceresco, Mich., and John Murphey of Sioux Falls, So. Dak., Mrs. Clara Lawell and Mrs. Lucy Hartge both of Muncie, Ind. Mrs. Lawell arrived a week ago and spent many happy hours visiting with her sister. There are also 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held from the Kubltschek & Kastler Funeral Home Monday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev. W. L. Breaw of the Methodist church. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

D., Mrs. Clara Lewell [Lawell] of Muncie, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Howard Watkins and family, Clare Watkins of Blue Earth, Minn., A. H. McCormick of Evanston, Ill., Fred McCormick of Elmore, Minn., Elmer McCormick and family of Hampton, Mr. and Mrs. Harley McCormick of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lacy and daughter, Evelyn of Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Fireball of Audubon, Mrs. M. C. Eckstein and daughters, Edna and Ione of Webster City and Mr. and Mrs. Will Nelson of Lone Rock, and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Koestler and family of Lone Rock.
