Peter Paul Wanken, the son of John and Mathilda Ritter Wanken, was born on November 24, 1897, on a farm in Wright County, south of Clarion, Iowa. He grew up in the Clarion area and received his education there. He was united in marriage with Gladys Anna Smith in 1921 at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion, and to this union were born eight children. The family lived on a farm south of Clarion for several years and then moved to Eagle Grove, where they lived for over 40 years. Mr. Wanken was tank wagon man for Chapman Oil Co. for many years. A short time ago they sold their home in Eagle Grove and had lived in the Des Moines and Albia. Mrs. Wanken died in June of 1984. He was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Church in Eagle Grove.

He died early Thursday morning, March 21, 1985, at Albia, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 27 days.

He is survived by six daughters, Kathleen, Mrs. Edgar Dykeman of Riverside, Calif.; Marjorie, Mrs. Earl Portz of Albia, Iowa; Betty, Mrs. E. A. Alexander of Escondido, Calif.; Rosalie, Mrs. Harold Shriner of Des Moines; Mary, Mrs. Floyd Meier of Bellevue, Iowa; Shari, Mrs. Larry Casebeer of Clinton; two sons, Eugene Wanken of Eagle Grove; and Daniel Wanken of Fayetteville, N.C.; a nephew, who grew up in the Wanken home, Leland Wanken of Modesto, Calif.; 39 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a nephew, Edwin Wanken, who was raised by Pete and Gladys Wanken, 1 sister and 8 brothers.

Funeral services for Peter P. (Pete) Wanken, 87, of Eagle Grove, were held on Monday, March 25,1985 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Fr. Paul R. Peters officiated and burial was in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Parish Rosary services were held on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
