Gladys Anna Smith Wanken
July 13, 1901 ---- June 21, 1984

Gladys Anna Smith was born July 13, 1901, in Geneseo, Ill., the daughter of Edwin and Maude Chapman Smith. She came to Iowa as a young girl and lived with her family in Wright County. She was united in marriage to Peter Wanken of Clarion in 1921 at Clarion. The couple made their home on a farm south of Clarion before moving to Eagle Grove 42 years ago. A short time ago, they sold their home and had been living in Des Moines.

Gladys died suddenly on June 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harold Shriner in Des Moines. At the time of her death, she had reached the age of 82 years, 11 months and eight days.

She is survived by her husband, two sons Eugene Wanken, Eagle Grove, and Daniel Wanken, Fayetteville, N.C.; six daughters Kathleen (Mrs. Edgar) Dykeman, Riverside, Calif.; Marjorie (Mrs. Earl) Portz, Albia; Betty (Mrs. E.A.) Alexander, Escondido, Calif.; Rosalie (Mrs. Harold) Shriner, Des Moines; Mary (Mrs. Floyd) Meier, Bellevue; and Shari (Mrs. Larry) Casebeer, Clinton; one brother, Willis Smith, Ridgecrest, Calif.; 39 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Golda (Mrs. George) Wanken.

Mrs. Wanken was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, and Catholic Daughters of America in Eagle Grove. CDA Rosary was recited at 4 p.m. Sunday and the Parish Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday Funeral services were held at 10:30 Monday, June 25, at the Sacred Heart Church, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Father Paul R. Peters officiated and burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
