October 13, 1857 --- December 17, 1932

James Rose, Pioneer Eagle Grove business man away at his home on North Commercial Avenue early Saturday morning. He started a business in this city 45 years ago. He owned his home here and took pride in the growth and advancement of the city. He has a wide acquaintance in this vicinity who greatly regret his passing and extend the surviving wife and other relatives their heartfelt sympathy. The following obituary was prepared by his pastor, the Rev. W. L. Breaw:

Obituary

James William Rose, son of William and Ruth Rose, was born near Woodstock, Canada, October 13, 1857, and died at his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Dec. 17, 1932, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 4 days.

He came with his parents to the United States when two years of age and settled at Davenport, Iowa. He grew to manhood within the state and engaged in business at Renwick, Iowa for a number of years. He came to Eagle Grove 45 years ago and engaged in the livery business. He was a rural mail carrier for 15 years and later was engaged in the automobile business.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary McCoy of Eagle Grove on Feb. 21, 1909. Since their marriage they have lived in the same home in Eagle Grove. He was active in business until about five years ago. Since that time he has lived a quiet and retiring life, enjoying good health until a few months ago. In the early fall he became anxious about his condition and consulted a physician. Since that time he has been under a doctor's care. [Unreadable] but he gradually grew worse and although confined to his home, he was about the house until shortly before his death.

Mr. Rose was a quiet man with a genial personality who by his straight forward business methods has made for himself a host of friends. He was a kind and loving husband, a good neighbor and a loyal friend and citizen.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife, Mrs. Mary Rose, of Eagle Grove, his step-son, Erwin McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Bailey of Van Nuys, Calif. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one half-brother also one sister and one half-sister.

The death of Mr. Rose marks the passing of one more of the early pioneers of Eagle Grove. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral services were held from the Methodist church In Eagle Grove, Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 20 at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. L. Breaw. He was laid to rest in the Rose Hill cemetery at Eagle Grove.

Those who attended the funeral from out-of-town were, his sister, Mrs. Jennie Bailey of Van Nuys, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. E. H. McCoy and daughter of Des Moines, and Fred Lehwan and son, Fred, of Thompson, Iowa.
