Leone Goad was born on April 19, 1908, Easter Sunday, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the only daughter of Arthur and Ellen Knight Goad. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1927 and went on to attend the University of Commerce in Des Moines, Iowa. She had an extended business career and in 1934, while serving in the District Attorney's Office in Boone, Iowa, she married J. M. Franzen, a registered pharmacist. In 1936, The Franzen Pharmacy was opened in Eagle Grove and she worked as a partner in the business and when it was sold in 1958, moved to Clear Lake, Iowa. In 1963, she went back to work, with her business and legal experience, and offered her services to the national headquarters of the Episcopal Church in New York. She was a national appointee and was assigned to the overseas (foreign) division and went to Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. She served for five years and had the opportunity for much world travel. In 1960, she returned to the States and completed her world travel by circling the globe. Upon her return to the States, she went to Miami, Fla., and was secretary to the Episcopal Bishop. Upon retirement, she moved to Oregon, where she lived for twenty years near the Willamette Valley. In 1994, she returned to Eagle Grove and was a resident at Rotary Ann Retirement Home.
Leone G. Franzen died Thursday, January 6, 2000, at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 91.
She is survived by a nephew, James A. Goad, Redmond, Ore.; and a close friend, Velda Watkins, Mason City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Gerald, who died at 30 years of age.
There will be no services and burial will be at a later date.
Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
