Obituary of Nels O. Christenson
(By Rev. T. J. Severtson)Nels O. Christenson was born on Sept. 8, 1853, at Skjold or Stavanger, Norway, Europe, and died in his home on North Montgomery Ave., Eagle Grove, Iowa, Oct. 8, 1935, age 82 years and one month.
He was baptized into Christ Jesus in infancy, received instruction and confessed his Christian faith in his youth. In 1873 he came to the United States to Illinois and lived there for some time, later going to Wisconsin and in 1878 he came to Iowa and has since remained in Iowa.
On the 26th day of April, 1884, he was united in marriage to Eva Larsen. Four children were born to this union: Lette, Bertha, Oscar and Amy. Mrs. Eva Christenson passed away from this life, March 27, 1894, and of the four children only Amy survives.
On the 26th day of October, 1895, Mr. Christenson was married to Bertha Catherine Larson. To them were born seven children: Arthur, Ellen, Lewis, Nellard, Bessie, Eva and Clarence. Of these only two remain, Nellard and Bessie.
He is now survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Christenson, and by three children: Mrs. Amy France of Grand Rapids, Mich., Nellard of Eagle Grove and Mrs. Bessie Lindstrom of Clarion, Iowa, and by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, all his brothers and sisters having passed away before him.
Mr. Christenson was employed by the C. & N. W. R. R. from October, 1888 until March, 1902. He was employed by the C. & G. W. R. R. from 1902 until 1913, and again re-employed by the C. & N. W. R. R. from 1913 until he retired.
Mr. Christenson was a quiet, unassuming man. Very faithful in his employment, dependable and trustworthy. He was a dutiful father and husband, and a good neighbor. He was a very faithful member of the church and loved his Saviour.
Although he had failed in health very noticeable for some time and had been under constant care of doctors for some time, yet he died suddenly Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 8th.
Funeral services were held from the home at 2:30 and from the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church at 3 o'clock, Friday, Oct. 11. Burial was made in the family lot of the Rose Hill cemetery.
