Betty Jean Rayl was born March 31, 1931, the daughter of Edward and Delia Bayliss Rayl at Rowan. She attended schools in Rowan and Clarion.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Carolus of Belmond on October 31, 1949 at Clarion. The couple lived near Britt, Dows, where they lived for 18 years, and Eagle Grove. In Eagle Grove Ralph was employed at Boone Valley Cooperative Processing Association. Ralph died in 1985.

Betty was a member of the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.

Betty Jean Carolus died at her home January 27, 1989, at the age of 57 years, nine months, and 27 days.

She was preceded in death by her father; her husband; and brother, James, who died at the age of 14.

She is survived by her mother; one son, Thomas, Barstow, Calif.; and one daughter, Mrs. Lee (Patricia) Dau, Des Moines; two sisters, Marilyn Schultz, Des Moines, and Mrs. Joe (Frances) Tegland, Belmond; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held February 1, at 10 a.m. at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. The Rev. Carlton Shaw officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
