Mrs. J. Fatland Buried Sunday

Aged Eagle Grove Lady Passed Away at the Home of Her Daughter in Utica, Ill.

Mrs. John Fatland, well known here, died at the home of her daughter in Utica, Ill., Friday, Jan. 8. The remains were brought to Eagle Grove and were burled by the side of her husband in Rose Hill cemetery. We join the rest of the community in extending to the bereaved relatives sincerest sympathy.

Sarah Nelson was born June 9, 1844, in Evenger, in northern Norway. She came to America in 1863. The trip was in company with two brothers. It was made on a wooden sailing vessel and required five weeks to cross the ocean. She landed in Quebec and came by water to Chicago, Ill. She settled in Plattsville, Ill., where she worked out for a few years.

She was united in marriage to John Thompson. They moved to a farm about six miles from Ames, Iowa. Three daughters were born to this union. When the youngest was six months old Mr. Thompson died. Mrs. Thompson returned to Illinois, where she kept house for her two brothers for six years. On March 30, 1878, she was united in marriage to John Fatland, who was a widower with eight children. To this second union four children were born.

Mr. and Mrs. Fatland lived in Newark, Ill., till 1901, when after her husband’s death, she moved to Eagle Grove. She lived at 704 S. Eastern avenue till her health began to fail. She then went to live with her children. At the time of her death, which occurred on Jan. 8, 1926, she was living with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Severson of Utica, Ill. At the time of her death she was 81 years, 6 months and 29 days old.

She was confirmed in the State Church of Norway and has lived in the Christian life, raising her children in the Knowledge of God.

She leaves the following to mourn: Julia Nelson of Billings, Mont., Tom Fatland of Mason City; Convel Fatland of Sheridan, Ill., Antis Fatland of Aurora, Ill., Lilly Christopher of Langford, S. D., Conrad Fatland of Chicago, Ill.; Josephine Johnson of Hettinger, N. D., Sarah Severson of Utica, Ill., Sarah Severson of Utica, Ill., Sam Fatland of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Mary Russell of Des Moines, and Bertha Morton of Eagle Grove. There are thirty-nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Morton. The sermon was preached by W. G. Muhleman of the M. E. church. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery, Eagle Grove.
