JOHN FATLAND REMOVED BY DEATH

John Fatland was born near Stavanger, Norway, August 10, 1832, and was the son of Torger and Margreta Fatland.

He had no early educational advantages but took up his pursuit of an education at the age of 20 and graduated from the Agricultural school of Norway. Was superintendent of the practical department of said school for two years, during which time he also acted as a private tutor. Built first iron plow made in Norway, which was made of cast iron and with unpolished mould board

He came to America, locating in Grundy county, Ill., in July 1862. Married Miss Sarah Thompson in 1863, who died September 14, 1877, leaving eight children, one having died in infancy, and the youngest died five months after the mother. The living are: Mrs. Julia Nelson, Kanawha, Ia.; Torkel Fatland, Austin, Minn.; Antis Fatland, Galt, Ia.; Convel Fatland, Sheridan, Ill.; Conrad Fatland, Mt. Pleasant, Ia.; Mrs. Lillian Newtson and; Mrs. Josie Johnson, Perkins, Co., S. D.

He married Mrs. Sarah Thompson, March 30, 1879. She was a widow with three children: Mrs. Sarah Severson, Sheridan, Ill.; Mrs. Jane Coppack, Perkins county, S. D.; and Julia, who died in 1894.

The children of the last marriage are: Sam Fatland, Utica, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Russell, Des Moines, Ia.; Mrs. Bertha Morton, Keensburg, Colo.; and the youngest son, William, who died August 29, 1909

He lived and farmed in Kendall, Co. Ill., from about 1865 to 1900 and located in Eagle Grove in spring of 1901.

Five sisters are living in Norway and a sister, Mrs. Margareta Mickelson, Hackley, Kan.

He died Sunday, January 29, aged 78 years, 5 months and 19 days.

Religious life. Early in life he spent about fifteen years in special and devoted Bible study. A firm believer in the doctrines of Christ as taught in the New Testament and a strong advocate of practical Christianity.

Funeral was from the home Tuesday, January 31, 1911, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Ivy L. Fatland, of Mt. Pleasant, Ia., assisted by Rev. A. Fauquet, pastor of Baptist church of this city. Text, John 11:25.

Obituary of John Fatland

John Fatland was born near Stavanger, Norway, Aug. 10, 1832, the son of Torger and Margreta Fatland. In his youth he had little opportunity for getting an education but at 20 years of age he entered the agricultural school of Norway from which he graduated and for two years was superintendent of the practical department, and during that time was also a private tutor. He invented and constructed the first iron plow made in Norway.

In 1862 he came to the United States and located in Grundy county, Ill., where he was married in 1863 to Miss Sarah Thompson who died Sep. 14, 1877, leaving eight children. One child had died in infancy and the youngest died five months after the mother.

The living children are Mrs. Julia Nelson of Kanawha, Torkel Fatland of Austin, Minn.; Antis Fatland of Galt, Convel Fatland, Sheridan, Ill.; Conrad Fatland, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Gillian Newtson and Mrs. Josie Johnson of Perkins Co. S. D.

On March 23 [30] th, 1879 the deceased was married to Mrs. Sarah Thompson who had three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Severson Sheridan, Ill.; Mrs. Jane Coppack, Perkins Co., S. D. and Julia who died in 1894.

Four children were born to this union, Sam Fatland, Utica, Ill. Mrs. Mary Russell, Des Moines, Mrs. Bertha Morton, Keensburg, Colo., and William who died Aug. 29, 1909.

From 1865 to 1900 Mr. Fatland lived a farmers life in Kendall Co., Ill., and came to Eagle Grove, and lived on South Eastern Ave. since 1901.

He left five sisters living in Norway and one, Mrs. Margreta Mickelson at Hackley, Kan. He died Sunday, Jan. 29th, aged 78 years and nearly 6 months. He was a thorough student and original thinker and spent many years in the devoted study of the bible and was a firm believer in the teachings of Christ and an earnest advocate of practical christianity. He was a frequent contributor to the press, writing on moral and economic subjects.

The funeral was held at the home Tuesday January 31st, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Fatland of Mt. Pleasant, assisted by Rev. A. Fauquet of this city. The sermon text was John 11:25. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
