Death of William Fatland

William Penn Fatland, son of Sarah and John Fatland of Eagle Grove, Iowa, was born September 4th, 1885 on a farm near Newark, Ill., where he spent the first fifteen years of his life.

Overcoming misfortunes is a sure test of manhood and in this our beloved brother was tried many times.

At the age of two and one half years he suffered for a period of about three months from an abcess in the lining of the lung. At this time it was necessary to undergo a serious operation. A kind and loving father and mother watched him from day to day and thought it would be Gods plan to take him as a bud, but it was not so.

At the age of fifteen be was struck by partial paralysis on the right side from which he never fully recovered. Twice he was struck to the ground by lighting only to arise with a new determination.

October 8tb, 1906 he had the misfortune of having his leg broken and being alone it was necessary to crawl ninety rods to the nearest house to receive assistance.

August 25th, 1909 he met with a fatal accident. He was endeavoring to untangle a rope in a haysling near the top of the barn when the ropes broke and caused him to fall a distance of 25 feet striking a cross beam and receiving fatal Injuries before reaching the floor.

Never a murmur of complaint came from the lips of the one now silent, but many an expression of desire to leave the world so full of suffering and go to the blessed home of the kind and loving Father in Heaven who supplies the strength to endure all, even death itself.

The deceased leaves his father and mother, a brother, Sam, and two sisters, Bertha Fatland and Mrs. Mary Russell of Des Moines. A host of friends join the Times Gazette in extending the deepest sympathy to his bereaved family.

A terrible accident happened to Will Fatland, when he fell about 30 feet, in Mr. Weland's barn, Wednesday afternoon. He was so badly hurt there was no hope for his recovery from the first. He suffered for three days, and death came as a relief to intense suffering on Sunday morning, at the dawn of a beautiful day.

Besides his parents, he leaves several brothers and sisters. To the dear young girl who was shortly to become his bride, the shock of his sudden death comes with a fearful blow. To her, and to the grief stricken family, we extend sincere sympathy.

The funeral was held in the Samuel church, Eagle Grove, Tuesday A. M., with Rev. Distad conducting the service, and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at Eagle Grove.
