April 1860 --- September 16, 1907

Patrick Rankin Dead.

The sudden death of Patrick Rankin Monday was received with profound regret by the entire community. Mr. Rankin had been off duty for a few days and had been away for a short outing visiting relatives, but had come up town Monday to have his watch inspected preparatory to going to go out on his run Tuesday morning. About five o'clock he left the Parker & O'Toole drug store, where he had been chatting with friends, intending to go home to supper, but he must have not gone many steps when he was stricken with hemorrhage of the lungs, as he was found a few minutes later in Dr. O’Toole's office on the couch with a pool of blood upon the floor near him. He only lived a minute or so after the arrival of the doctor.

Some few years ago Mr. Rankin was afflicted with a throat trouble from the effects of which he nearly lost his power of speech and the malady must have settled in his lungs, which have been weak ever since. However, he had enjoyed the best of health in the past two years, aside from the hoarseness.

Patrick Rankin was born in Richmond, Va., in 1860, and came to Eagle Grove in the year 1881. For the first five years he was employed in the railway shops, after which he went into the engine service and became an engineer in 1888, and at the time of his death was close to the top of the list, and was one of the best and most trusty engineers on the Northern Iowa division.

In 1891 he was married to Minnie Clearey [Clary], who with the little daughter Marguerite, are left to mourn the loss of a faithful, obedient and loving husband and father.

The funeral services were held from the Catholic church Thursday morning and interment was made in Gethsemane cemetery.

In the death of Patrick Rankin Eagle Grove loses one of its best citizens and one whose honesty and strict integrity made him a friend to all who knew him.

The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones in their hour of sorrow.
