VERONA, WI - Walter Earle Moffitt, affectionately know as "Duke", died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at the age of 79. Duke was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and was the second son of Walter and Harriet (Barnett) Moffitt. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School n 1941 and promptly joined the Marines. He saw action as a raider of Iwo Jim, Bougainville, and Guadalcanal during World War II and was decorated for his valor on the beach at Iwo Jima. He concluded his war service as a peacekeeper in Hiroshima. On Feb. 28, 1944, Duke was united in marriage to his life long bride of 59 years, Betty Pressler. Duke worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway for several years, and later worked as a dispatcher and terminal manager for the Ellsworth Freight Lines. Duke and Betty moved to Verona, Wis., in 1981.
He loved outdoor activities, including beautifying his yard and tending to his birds and other animals that visited there. Duke dearly loved his family and was incredibly proud of all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Duke is survived by his beloved wife, Betty (Pressler) Moffitt of Verona, Wis.; his children, Dr. Michael Moffitt and wife, Reba of Eagle Grove, Iowa and Chris (Moffitt) Newcomb and husband, Robert of Verona, Wis.; his grandchildren, Bret Newcomb and wife, Rachel, Erin (Newcomb) Bradley and husband, Dr. Robert, Taylor Moffitt and wife, Angie, Zachary Moffitt and wife, Liz, Sara Newcomb, and Jordan Moffitt; and his precious great-grandchildren, Adeline Moffitt, Gus Walter Newcomb, Gretchen Newcomb and Drew Bradley. He is also survived by brothers, Jim Moffitt of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Ralph Moffitt of San Antonio Texas; and sister, Eleanor (Moffitt) Parsons of Wichita, Kan.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Duke was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Harriet Moffitt; and brothers, Roy and Ed Moffitt.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at GRACE EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH of Eagle Grove, Iowa. Pastor John Nett will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at FOUST FUNERAL HOME and burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery of Eagle Grove.

Duke's remarkable sense of humor and loving devotion to his family and friends has inspired us all throughout our lives. We are comforted by the many wonderful memories we hold in our hearts.
