William Duane Babcock was born on November 11, 1960, the son of Marvin and Linda Wheeler Babcock, at Clarion. He received his education through the Goldfield school system and the U. S. Army. He was united in marriage to Angel Kiefer of Clarion on May 26, 1979, at her home in Clarion. William then joined the Army where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. The couple was stationed in Germany for three years. Bill earned an Honorable Discharge in 1986, and came back to live in Goldfield. He then joined the Eagle Grove, Iowa National Guard. He was a member of the Goldfield United Methodist Church, Iowa National Guard, and Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scout award. He was also an avid motorcyclist.

On August 11, 1988, William Babcock was flown to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died later that day at the age of 27 years, and nine months.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alfred Wheeler, grandparents, George and Mahala Babcock; and one uncle, Clinton Wheeler. He is survived by his wife, Angel; son, Anthony, and daughter, Christina, all of Corwith; parents, Marvin Babcock, Henderson, Nev.; and Linda Lou Wheeler Babcock, Goldfield; a brother, Barry, Goldfield; and a sister, Mrs. Tom (Valerie) Harvey, Goldfield; and grandmother, Mrs. Alfred Wheeler of Goldfield.

Funeral services were held August 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Goldfield United Methodist Church in Goldfield. The Rev. Ken Peterson officiated, and burial was in the Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield. Military rites and flag presentation at the graveside were performed by the Eagle Grove, Iowa National Guard. The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
