October 29, 1876 --- February 27, 1941

Eugene Andrew Riebhoff was born October 29, 1876, on a farm north of Algona, Iowa, the son of James F. and Jessie Riebhoff.

In his early teens he moved with his parents to Burt.

As a young man he was industrious and on August 1, 1899, he began working for the Northwestern Railroad.

On Nov. 25, 1899, he married Elizabeth Cogdill and they made their home in the same town of Burt.

He remained in the employ of the same railroad company and became section foreman in January, 1900. After being made section foreman, they were moved to Renwick, Iowa, for one month, then to Webster City, until August 1, 1903, when they were moved to Eagle Grove, which remained his home town through all the passing years.

In August, 1903, he began firing for the Northwestern, and passed test to rank of engineer in 1906, and continued in that service for the same road until the time of his death.

He was accepted in the Masonic lodge May 2, 1918, and was advanced to De Molay Consistory, Clinton Chapter on May 14, 1920.

“Gene” was a man who loved his work and loved his home, in which he and his wife “Riehe” were blessed with four children: Dellice, James, Ethel and Eugenia.

Although he was a man of unusually good vigor and health through all his sixty-four active years, he had an attack of sickness on Friday evening, Feb. 21, that required a hurried trip to a Fort Dodge hospital for an operation. Although the best of medical treatment was given him, there were complications which set in that could not be corrected.

He slipped away quietly to his Maker at eleven o’clock Thursday night, Feb. 27, 1941, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 28 days, leaving his wife, their four children, seven grandchildren, his mother, one brother, two sisters, and a host of friends to mourn his passing.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

He was untied with the Methodist church in 1928.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the Methodist church in charge of his former pastor, Rev. W. G. Muhleman of Alden, and the pastor, Rev. J. R. Tumbleson.

Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Riebhoff, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Verne Phelps, Central City; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Williamson and family, Motley, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kingsley and family, Plainfield; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cogdill, Burt; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith, Burt; Frank Riebhoff and two sons, Algona; Flora Riebhoff, Algona: Mr. and Mrs. Verne Riebhoff, Algona; Mr. and Mrs. A.
