Elizabeth (Newgirg) McDermott

May 9, 1878 ---- October 31, 1956

Elizabeth McDermott, 82, 232 Dyer Blvd., Hammond, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, at her daughter's residence, where she made her home, following a lingering illness. Funeral services Saturday, Nov. 3, Kastler Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, Iowa. Burial Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Huber Funeral Home, 905 W. Chicago Ave., East Chicago, in charge of arrangements. Surviving: 3 daughters. Mrs. E. J. Sprengelmeyer of Hammond, Mrs. Richard Bradley of Clarion, Iowa, Mrs. Josephin Mahnke of Waterloo, Iowa; 3 sons, Chris McDermott of Eagle Grove, Lawrence of Thor, Iowa, John of Eagle Grove; 18 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.

Elizabeth McDermott Funeral Saturday
Funeral services were held Saturday morning in Sacred Heart church for Mrs, Elizabeth McDermott who died Oct. 31st at the home of her daughter Mrs. E. J. Sprengelmyer in Hammond, Ind. Mrs. McDermott was the mother of Chris McDermott of Eagle Grove and Lawrence McDermott of Thor. Rev. Maurice Mullan officiated at the services and burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. McDermott who was born in Germany came to this community when a small child and has made her home here practically all her life. Mrs. McDermott moved to her daughter's home after her husband died in 1947.

Those who were here from out of town for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Martens and daughter of Spencer; Mrs. Naughton, Pocahontas; Mr. and Mrs, John Pendergast of Sac City; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klinger of Ft Dodge; Mrs. Jim Johnson of Estherville; Mrs. Nell Biegger of LuVerne; Mrs. K. Strong of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence McDermott and family of Thor; Mr and Mrs. E. J. Sprengelmyer and family of Hammond, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Bradley and family of Clarion and Mrs. Josephine Manche of Waterloo.

The daughter of Eva and Henry Newgirg, born May 9th, 1878 at Prenmend Reuth, Germany, she came to this country with her parents when she was a small child and they settled in this community; she was one of 8 children and the last one of the family.
She was united in marriage to James McDermott, Nov. 16, 1898. Mr. McDermott passed away May 15, 1947 and shortly afterward Mrs. McDermott left to make her home with her daughter Mrs. E. J. Sprengelmeyer in Hammond. Ind. Although she was in poor health for some time her death was unexpected. She passed away Wednesday morning Oct. 31, 1956 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 22 days.

She is survived by 7 children, John and Chris of Eagle Grove, Lawrence of Thor, Josephine (Mrs. Mahnke of Waterloo), Margaret C. (Mrs. E. J. Sprengelmeyer of Hammond, Ind.), Mary of Clarinda and Mildred (Mrs. R. N Bradley of Clarion. Twin daughters died in infancy. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Royal Neighbors.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3 in Sacred Heart church with Rev. Maurice Mullan in charge. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
