Caroll Samuel Pate was born on January 16, 1917, in Woolstock, Iowa, to Samuel and Elvira Parrish Pate. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. He worked as a farm hand in the Clarion, Iowa, area. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage with Emma Jean Metzger on January 19, 1947, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, Iowa. They lived and farmed in Clarion, retiring in 1980, but continued to live on the farm.

He was a member of the Holmes Lutheran Church and the Clarion American Legion Post #159. Caroll Samuel Pate died Monday, July 12, 1999, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, at the age of 82.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Jean; three sons, Mark Pate and wife, Debra, Olatlia, Kan., Tim Pate and wife, Jayne, Clarion, and John Pate and wife, Cheri, Fairfax, Minn; five grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Sexe, Roswell, N. M. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Stephen; a brother, Cecil; and four sisters, Lola Gerber, Beulah Wallukait, Wilma Brown, and Hazel Scott.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes, Iowa, with Reverend Stan Peterson officiating. Burial was held in the Holmes Lutheran Cemetery. Military Rites were given by the Clarion VFW and American Legion Post #159. Willim Funeral Home in Clarion was in charge of arrangements.
