Rites Monday for E. D. Carter
Funeral services for E. D. Carter, 63, were held Monday afternoon at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Forbes officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Dodge. Mr. Carter had been seriously ill for some time, and had returned to the Veteran's Hospital, Iowa City, March 5, and died a short time later. He had had surgery there previously, but was able to return home for a few weeks. Mr. Carter had been in the sewer contracting business here since 1946 when the family moved from Elkader.

He is survived by his wife, one son Mark and one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Kelling, both of Eagle Grove, two grandchildren, his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Carter, and one adopted sister, Mrs. Ernest Thorson all of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Carter was a member of the Methodist Church where he had served on the board of trustees of the Eagle Grove Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.

Military rites were conducted by Clarence Shurtz Post.

OBITUARY

Eldred Dale Carter was born April 16, 1907, at Glidden, Iowa, the son of J. Raleigh and Cloie Day Carter. He graduated from the Dows High School, attended Ellsworth College at Iowa Falls, and graduated from Barber's school in Des Moines, in 1928. He worked as a barber in Rowan for two years. He was united in marriage to Genevieve Leota Boyington of Dows, at the Methodist Parsonage in Clarion January 1, 1934. The couple moved to Glidden where Mr. Carter operated a gasoline service station for a time before moving to Fayette, where he was manager of the theatre for a time, before purchasing a grocery store at Elkader. They operated three grocery stores from 1937 to 1943 when Mr. Carter entered the Navy. Mrs. Carter continued operation of the businesses until he was discharged in 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Carter sold their business and moved to Eagle Grove in 1946. Since that time, he has operated a contracting business and was active through much of his illness.

He entered the Veteran's Hospital at Iowa City on March 5 and passed away there a few hours later at the age of 63 years, 10 months, and 19 days.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Mark Carter, Eagle Grove; one daughter, Marsha (Mrs. Joseph Kelling), Eagle Grove; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Carter, Eagle Grove; two grandchildren and an adopted sister, Helen (Mrs. Ernest Thorson), Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1908.

Mr. Carter was a member of the United Methodist Church of Eagle Grove, the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He had served on the Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 8, 1971, at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church at agle Grove. The Rev. Donald L. Forbes officiated, and burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Ft. Dodge. Military rites were provided by the American Legion.
