John Leslie Godfrey was born on June 28, 1902, the son of John and Cora Wilcox Godfrey at Eagle Grove. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system.

He was united in marriage to Raye Fisher of Eagle Grove on May 1, 1928, at Eagle Grove. The couple had remained in Eagle Grove since that time.

John was employed as a postal clerk and mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Eagle Grove. During his spare time, John would build and remodel many homes in the Eagle Grove area. He also showed a keen interest in farming and livestock.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, and a member of the National Postal Clerks Association.

John Godfrey died February 21, 1989, at the Hamilton County Hospital, Webster City, from an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sharon Jane Godfrey; and one brother, Robert.

He is survived by his wife, Raye, Eagle Grove; two daughters, Mrs. Daryl (Janis) Harlan, Eagle Grove; and Mrs. Delbert (Rachel) Christensen, Eagle Grove; one brother, Richard, Rockford, Ill.; and one sister, Bessie Ulstad, Eagle Grove; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Paul Schaedig officiated at a private family service at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 25. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
