Obituary

Mack Fairbanks, son of Jeremiah and Minnie Fairbanks, was born in Clarion, December 21, 1897 [1896]. He was the youngest child and the only boy in a family of five children. One of his sisters, Maude, passed away in 1920 but the others are still living: Ethel, Mrs. C A. Neubecker of Waterloo; Lela, Mrs. J. J. Anderson of Canton, S. D. ; and Grace, Mrs. H, F. McMurry of New York City.

Mr. Fairbanks grew to manhood in Clarion, graduating from high school in the class of 1915. After that he spent two years at Grinnell college and then entered Whartin School of Finance in Philadelphia.

While he was in school there he enlisted in the United States army and soon after his induction he was sent to the Philippine Islands and later he spent twenty one months on the Island of Corregidor.

In 1922 he married Thalia Fisher of Eagle Grove and they established their home in Clarion. They remained here for six years and during that time two sons, Jerry and Mack, Jr., were born.

In 1928 the family moved to Chicago where they were living at the time of his death.

He was associated with the Congregational church all his life.

His parents were earnest supporters of First Congregational church, Clarion, always leaders in every activity of the church, and so from his childhood he was a constant attendant at the Sunday school and worship services. When he moved to Chicago the family associated immediately with Ravenswood Congregational church and both Mr. and Mrs. Fairbanks became active in the work and worship of the church. For many years Mr. Fairbanks taught a class of boys in the church school and was a member of the board of trustees of the church; and both husband and wife were leaders in the Benedicks, an organization of the young married people of the church.

For two or three years he has been employed in defense work by the Pioneer Gen-e-Motor Co., Chicago, and was thought to be in good physical condition. On coming from work early Friday morning, however, he suddenly became violently ill with a heart ailment and quickly passed away.

He leaves to mourn his death: his wife, Thalia Fairbanks; his two sons, Jerry, private first-class in the army specialized training corps, stationed at Washington Jefferson college at Washington, Penn.; and Mack, enlisted in the navy V5 training program (medical division) and stationed at Wabash college, Crawfordsville, Ind.
