George Edward HEARD

6 May 1895 ----- 20 October 1974

George Edward Heard was born May 6, 1895 at Collins, Mo., the son of George A. and Bessie Watkins Heard. He attended school near Colo and Zearing and the Hamilton School of Business, Mason City. He served in the U.S. Army in World War I.

He was united in marriage to Helen E. Lester of Magnolia, Minn., at LuVerne, Minn, on Nov. 29, 1922. The family came to Eagle Grove in 1933, where George engaged in the oil and seed corn business until he retired.

Mr. Heard died at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines, on Sunday, Oct. 20, after a long illness, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 14 days.

He is survived by his wife, and two sons: Harlan, Eagle Grove; and James, Kennewick, Wash. Also seven grandchildren.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Past Commander of the American Legion, served as Mayor and Councilman of Eagle Grove, was a member of Bower Lodge 464, Za Ga Zig Shrine, and past member of the Eagle Grove School Board. He also served as Wright County Supervisor for one term.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Donald Glazier officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Military services were given at the graveside by Clarence Shurtz Post of the American Legion.
