Rev. Thomas J Severtson
June 10, 1879 --- July 8, 1957

The Rev. T. J. Severtson, 78, died in Lutheran hospital, Fort Dodge, early Monday morning from injuries he received July 2 when his car went into a ditch and overturned 1 miles east of Eagle Grove along a gravelled road. Mrs. Severtson, 77, died about 3 p.m. July 2 at the scene of the accident, just east of the Bernard Maier farm home. It is reported that Severtsons were returning to Eagle Grove from Rockford, Ill., when the accident happened. No other vehicle was involved.

Funeral services for the Rev. Severtson will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church, which he served for 31 years. The Rev. Kenneth R. Torvik, pastor of that church, will conduct the services. The Rev. Owen Gangstead of Forest City, a son of Lake Lutheran church who was confirmed by Pastor Severtson, will preach the sermon. Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery. Dr. Raymond M. Olson, Minneapolis, will represent the Evangelical Lutheran church and Dr. V. T. Jordahl will represent the South Central District. Pastors of the Eagle Grove circuit will be honorary pallbearers. The board of directors of Lutheran hospital, Fort Dodge, will attend the services as a group.

Funeral services for Mrs. Severtson were conducted in Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Severtson retired as pastor of Lake Evangelical Lutheran church near Renwick July 30, 1956, after serving it as pastor for 39 years. He was pastor of both Lake and Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran churches from Nov. 1, 1917 until he resigned his pastorate June 30, 1949. The congregation of Lake Lutheran church recalled him and he continued as pastor of that church until his retirement a year ago.

Among those who survive the Rev. and Mrs. Severtson are a daughter, Genevieve, wife of the Rev. Gustav Odegaard, Northfield, Minn., and three sons, the Rev. Thomas Severtson, a chaplain in the navy, stationed in California; the Rev. Ansle Severtson, San Diego, Calif., and The Rev. Murley Severtson, Rockford, Ill.

Pastor T. J. Severtson, long time resident of Eagle Grove, died at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, early Monday morning, July 8, 1957 as a result of an automobile accident Tuesday, July 2 in which his wife wife Anna was almost instantly killed. The accident took place within a couple of miles of their home as they were returning from a trip to relatives and friends in Illinois.

Thom Josephin was born to Mr. and Mrs. Torres Severtson Bjergen at Newark, Ill., June 10, 1879. He attended Pleasant View Academy at Ottowa, Ill., 1900-1904, St. O1af College, Northfield, 1906-1907, and United Lutheran Church Seminary, St. Paul, 1907-1910. He married Anna Louise Murley at Platville, Ill., June 30, 1910 after which they moved to their first parish at Midland, S. D., 1910-1911. Their next parish was at Gruver, Iowa, 1911 to 1917. They then moved to Eagle Grove, where Pastor Severtson served the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church 1917 to 1949. At the same time he served Lake Lutheran church, Renwick. In 1949 he moved with his wife to Renwick, and continued to serve Lake church until his "retirement" to his own home in Eagle Grove the summer of 1956, after which he served, as interim pastor at Jewell and at Trinity Lutheran church, Hardy.

He is survived by one daughter and three sons, who are all in Christian service: Genevieve, Mrs. Gustav Odegaard, whose husband is assistant to the president of Southern Minnesota District, Evangelical Lutheran church; Thomas S. Severtson, Santa Ana, Calif.; Chaplain USN Ansle T. Severtson, pastor at San Diego, Calif.; Murley A. Severtson, pastor at Rockford, Ill. He is also survived by two brothers and four sisters: S. Theodore Severtson, pastor at Lanesboro, Minn.; Joe Severtson, farmer, at Mapleton, Minn.; Tillie, Mrs. Tom Tendall, Clarion; Severine, Mrs. Bert Erickson, Estherville; Mary, Mrs. Andrew Scott, Belmond; Miss Julia Severtson, Estherville. Also by many nieces and nephews and by seventeen grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, a son Luther, who died in infancy, his brothers Severt and Albert and sisters Susan, Mrs. Hans Olson, and Carrie, Mrs. Ole Wicks.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 11 at the Evangelical Lutheran church. Pastor Kenneth R. Torvik conducted the services with Kastler- Funeral Home in charge. Interment was in Rosehill cemetery.
