Services For Jack DeVaul Here Monday

Jack DeVaul, 72, died Thursday night, Feb 21, in Mercy hospital, Ft. Dodge where he had been a patient about a month.

He had been ill and in failing health for almost five years, and in the hospital at various times.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Sacred Heart church with Rev. Francis Phelan officiating. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.

Mr. DeVaul is survived by his wife, their daughter Mary Jane, Mrs. Jeff George of Houston, Texas and two grand daughters. He was the last of his immediate family.

Born in Des Moines he had lived in Eagle Grove the greater part of his life, coming here as a young man to work for the Chicago and North Western as a brakeman. Later he was appointed manager of the Iowa State Liquor Store where he was employed 22 years, retiring on pension, about seven years ago. From that time he devoted his time to farming his property at the extreme end of West Broadway.

Jack was a veteran of World War I and an active member of the Clarence Shurtz post of the American legion here from its inception.

Jack's first interest however was always baseball and he was an avid fan and player. He had a fund of baseball knowledge equaled by few others.

He was the moving spirit and guiding light for baseball in this area for many years He acted as coach and played for the local teams and was frequently drafted by other towns to help them get a team organized.

Jack played on the Eagle Grove teams as long as he was able physically and then graduated to the coaching position. His lively chatter at the games was known to every fan in North Iowa.

He was also a member of the Eagle Grove park commission and to his interest can be attributed much of the fine baseball facilities maintained here by the Park Commission.

Jack's ability to make friends was also one of his outstanding characteristics. Few people could number as many friends as he.

Here from out of town due to Mr. DeVaul's death were, Mrs. George, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Mulready, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Merrill, Steve and Mike, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mulready of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Noll, LuVerne, Minn., Mrs. Bess Devine of Winterset, Col. Harley Finley of Camp Dodge.
