Harley Roger Derscheid was born December 4, 1891 on his grandfather farm two and one-half miles southwest of Eagle Grove. He was the son of Henry and Mary Emerick Derscheid. He moved with his parents to their new home on an adjoining farm in 1893. He attended the neighborhood rural school and later attended what is now Iowa State University at Ames.

After the first World War, he and his brother, Glen, farmed what is now his farm in Troy Township. When Glen married and moved to another farm, Harley continued farming this farm and other land which he acquired. He retired to Rotary Ann Retirement Home on December 14, 1981.

Harley Derscheid died at the Rotary Ann Infirmary September 22, 1987 after a lingering illness following a stroke in May of 1987.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glen, two sisters, Esther Derscheid and Florence Derscheid.

He is survived by sisters, Pearl of Cedar Rapids; Helen Orth of Iowa City; one brother, Robert of Eagle Grove; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held September 25, 1987 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. The Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
