Philip E. Dignan
January 18, 1881 ---– December 3, 1899

Sudden Death
Philip Dignan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Dignan, died suddenly at the home of his parents last Sunday at 3 o'clock a.m. He had retired the evening before apparently in his usual health and at about 3 o'clock in the morning his mother was awakened by unusual noises in his room and upon going there found him in distress and vomiting. She left him a moment to get something to relieve and returned barely in time to see him breathe his last. His death was caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the heart. The sudden death of this admirable young man is an awful shock to the family which is felt by the entire community.

He was born in Troy township in Jan. 1881, being nearly 19 years of age at his death. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday at 10 o'clock a.m. Rev. Mr. Drake preached the sermon and L. P. Eversz sang two appropriate solos. There was a large attendance of neighbors and friends whose sympathy goes out to the sorrowing family.

Died At the home of his parents in Troy township on Sunday morning, December 3, 1899, Philip Edward Dignan.

This simple announcement will bring sorrow to many who were personal friends to the young man whose life has gone out and whose days on earth were so few. Saturday night the young man retired with the rest of the family in his usual good health with no thought of the sad event which so soon followed. Early Sunday morning Mrs. Dignan heard some noise in the room of her son and immediately went there. The young man was retching and in considerable agony from a sickness at the stomach. He was looked after and his mother went down stairs to get some medicine. When she returned to the upper room the boy was dead. This all took only a short time and help had been already sent for. Nothing, however, could be done for the lifeless body.

Philip Dignan was born on the farm where he died, in February, 1881. He was raised in Troy township and had spent all his life there. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dignan and leaves, besides his mother and father, five sisters, Mesdames C. R. Belknap, C. F. Young and P. T. Frandsen and Misses Mande and Catherine; and one brother, John W., who has been away at school and arrived, in response to a message on Monday morning.

The young man was much respected in the community where he lived and the hearts of many will go out in deep sympathy to his parents and relatives in their sad affliction. The funeral will occur on Tuesday morning at the home in Troy township, about five miles from Eagle Grove.
