15 February 1842 ---- 8 October 1913

Edward Dignan was born in New York City Feb. 15th 1842. His parents died in his early childhood and at six years of age he went to Pennsylvania and lived in the home of a Quaker until he was thirteen years of age when he returned to New York City. Four years later he went to Orange County, N. Y. and in 1868 came to Wright County, Iowa and bought some wild land in Troy township. Two years later he put on some improvements and farmed it.

In 1872 he was married to Miss Viola Woodard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Woodard. He soon bought more land and they lived on this farm until they moved into Eagle Grove five years ago last March when they purchased a fine residence on So. Lincoln St.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dignan, Mrs. P. T. Fransden of Eagle Grove, Mrs. C. R. Belknap of Ceylon, Minn., Jno W. Dignan of San Leandro, Calif., Mrs. C. F. Young of Cooperstown, N. D., Philip who died at home in 1899 at 18 years of age, Mrs. F. E. Newburn, and Catherine, of Eagle Grove.

The funeral was held at the home Sunday Oct. 12th at 1:30 p. m., Rev. Wilkinson, of the Methodist church preaching the sermon. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. There was a large attendance of friends, neighbors and citizens of the surrounding country, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held by all his large acquaintance.

The floral tributes were unusually profuse and beautiful, conspicuous among which was a large wreath, a tribute to "Father" by the family.

Mr. Dignan was a kind husband and an indulgent father, adored by wife and children, who feel deeply the sad parting.

The deceased was afflicted the last two years with paralysis but was not confined to his bed until a few weeks preceding his death.

In the death of Mr. Dignan the community loses a good citizen of the highest honor and the most strict integrity.

Among those here from abroad to attend the funeral were all the living children, Frank Woodard of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Abbie Kline of Colo, Ia.

The bereaved wife and family have the warm sympathy of a large circle of neighbors and friends.
