Leona Bessie Wood was born April 26, 1897, at Lake Park, Ia., the daughter of Charles and Minnie Sheldon Wood. She moved to Edmore, N.D. with her parents by way of Minnesota. She attended school at Edmore, N.D. and Valley City Normal, then taught school in North Dakota and Iowa for four years.

She was united in marriage to George R. DeForest of Dows, Ia. on Sept. 23, 1919 at Edmore. The couple came to Eagle Grove to make their home.

Mr. DeForest owned the DeForest Hatchery in Eagle Grove, he died in 1973. Mrs. DeForest continued to reside in the family home until moving to the Rotary Ann Home two weeks prior to her death on Friday, April 30, at the age of 79 years and four days.

She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Shirley Van Hoy, Chase City, Va. and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son, Robert Lee, who died in 1964.

Mrs. DeForest was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rotary Ann Auxiliary, Worthwhile Class, Equality Club, Cecilian Music Club and was a past president of W.S.C.S. Mrs. DeForest was organist for over 30 years in the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 3 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Glazier officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
