Banker Takes Own Life at Portal, N. D.

Portal, N. D. Sept. 17. –AP – Charles H. Marshall, for the last five years manager of the Union Bank here which closed its doors three weeks ago, was found dead, hanging in the basement of the bank building Monday. He was found by his wife, who went in search of him when he did not return for lunch.

Prior to becoming manager of the bank. Marshall for 10 years practiced law in Portal. It is believed worries over bank affairs were the cause of Marshall’s act.

Charles Henry Marshall was born near Woolstock, Iowa, Feb. 15, 1882, where he grew to manhood. He attended school at the Humboldt college from which he later graduated after teaching for several years at St. Cloud, Minn., to pay his way.

He was united in marriage to Miss Lulu Hansel [Hansell] of Humboldt in June of 1912. One child, Murial, was born to this union. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall moved to Portal, N. D. where he has engaged in the practice of law. He organized the Union Bank of Portal several years ago out of the remnants of two banks which had failed of which he was chosen cashier and one of its directors. He had very heavy responsibilities and carried burdens which were too heavy for him to bear. He broke under the strain and died on Sept. 15, 1930 at the age of 48 years and seven months.

Mr. Marshall was very highly respected in Portal and where ever he was known. He had the confidence of all who knew him, as his positions will indicate. He led in all the community enterprises and it was said of him that "He was generous to a fault". His two great interests were his business and his home.

He was a great lover of children, and used to take them to the river, eight miles away, where they could swim. They used to go into his office during business hours and ask when he was going to take them to the river.

He was baptized in the French Lutheran church of Woolstock. He was an active member of the Masonic lodge. In his passing, Portal loses one of her leading citizens. He is survived by his wife and daughter, six brothers and sisters, who are: Mrs. Carrie Bernard of Eagle Grove, George and Ed. Marshall and Mrs. R. H. Penno of Woolstock and Mrs. Geo. Haskins and Mrs. T. E. Shea of Eagle Grove aside from many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services started from the Kubitschek & Kastler funeral parlors on Thursday at 1 o'clock. The body was taken to the French Lutheran church, northeast of Woolstock where the sermon was preached by Rev. W. G. Muhleman of the Eagle Grove Methodist church. The body was laid to rest in the French cemetery.
