EYLER, John H., 82, in Sun City Ariz., January 20. Retired owner of Eyler Funeral Home. Nearest family: wife, Caroline; daughter, Shirley Baker of Denver, Colorado.

John H. Eyler, 82, a well known Wright County resident, died at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City, Az., on Sunday evening, January 20, 1985. He and Mrs. Eyler had been spending the winters there. Services were held from the Clarion United Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon at 1:30. Rev. John Mann officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. The Eyler-William Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Robert F. McCool was the organist and Mrs. Steven Lashbrook was the vocalist. Casket bearers were; Jeffrey and Alan Lewis, Ed Landgraf, Elmer Brandt, Tom Stewart and Roger Sumners.

Jack was born on June 15, 1902 to Daniel H. and Susan Bell Eyler at Clarion. He graduated from the Clarion High School in 1921. While, in high school he worked for Jesse Smith & Sons Furniture and Funeral Home and became interested in funeral service. He graduated from the Hohenschuh-Carpenter Embalming School in Des Moines and returned to Clarion to work for the Smith family. On August 7, 1925, he and Caroline L. Lewis of Kanawha were married in Des Moines. In 1940 he purchased the funeral home from Smiths and established the Eyler Funeral Home at the present North Main Street location. He retired in 1969.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shirley Baker of Denver, Colo., and three grandchildren; Peter, John and Amy. His parents, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

In past years he was active in local and county civic affairs and was instrumental in helping establish the Community Memorial Hospital and Senior Center. His memberships included his church, Cyrene Lodge #325 AF & AM, Eagle Grove Chapter #123 Royal Arch Masons, Mt. Lebanon Commandry #61, Za Ga Zig Shrine of Des Moines, I.O.O.F. Lodge, Rotary, Clarmond Country Club, Clarion Area Chamber of Commerce and Senior Citizens. For over 60 years he had been an Iowa Licensed Funeral Director and was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association and past board member.
