ACCIDENT IS FATAL TO UNBORN BABY

Cars Collide Near Highview Saturday Night As Parents Are On Way To Hospital For Baby's Birth

Mrs. Marvel Elwood of Goldfleld, the former Phyllis Butz of Eagle Grove, was seriously injured in a car accident at Highview Saturday night, and her unborn baby died as a result of the accident.

Mr. Elwood was taking his wife to the hospital In Webster City for the birth of the baby, and had a head on collision on the curve at Highview with a car driven by Allen Hennigar of Clarion. Miss Mildred Cramer of Clarion was a passenger in the Hennigar car.

Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Voigt and Mr. and Mrs. John Cleveland of Eagle Grove arrived at the scene of the accident moments later, and took Mrs. Elwood to the hospital, where her 8 pound baby girl was born dead at 3 a. m. Sunday morning.

In addition to multiple bruises, Mrs. Elwood received a gash on her jaw which required about 50 stitches to close, a broken knee cap and cracked rib.

Mr. Elwood, Miss Cramer and Mr. Hennigar were treated at the hospital for head lacerations and were later released.

Funeral services for the baby, Arlene Marie, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wilson Funeral Chapel, in charge of Rev. Walter Ross. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. The Elwoods have two other children, a son and daughter.

Mrs. Elwood is still in the hospital but her condition is described as good, and she may be able to return home Sunday.

Both cars involved in the accident were severely damaged.
