Mildred Elizabeth Ofterdinger was born August 11, 1899, the daughter of Rheinhardt and Emma Thompson Ofterdinger at Des Moines. She received her high school diploma from the Des Moines school system. She was employed for 22 years as a policewoman for the Des Moines Police Department and earned lifetime membership to the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police.

She was united in marriage to Francis Champlin of Holmes on June 28, 1946, at Dubuque. The couple returned to Holmes after their marriage and she was employed by the Wright County Committee on Alcoholism and was very active with the local Alcoholics Anonymous.

Mildred Champlin died early Sunday morning at Trinity Regional Hospital, Fort Dodge, at the age of 88 years, eight months, and 13 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, who died in 1973, her parents, one brother, Harry, and one grandson, Mike.

She is survived by three step-sons, Francis Champlin, Tucson, Ariz.; Don LeRoy Champlin, Clarion; and William Champlin, Torrance, Calif; one brother, B. L. Ofterdinger, Des Moines; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 26, at the Goldfield Methodist Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. The Rev. Ken Peterson officiated, with the Rev. George Den Hartog, reading the Scripture passages.
