George Babcock (1898-1967)

January 2, 1898 --- September 2, 1967

George Babcock was born January 2, 1898 at Clarion, Iowa, the son of Charles and Ella Richardson Babcock. He was educated in the country schools near Clarion. On December 25, 1919 he was united in marriage to Mahala Jane Gatliff at Galt, Iowa.

The couple resided on farms in the Galt, Dows, and Sheffield area before moving to Eagle Grove in 1932.

He worked on highway construction for two years, then, in 1934, became employed by Wright County as a roads maintenance employee. He continued at this work until June 3, 1967 when he retired because of ill health Mr. and Mrs. Babcock became the parents of 10 children, 9 of whom survive. They are: Le Roy Babcock, Melvin Babcock, Marvin Babcock; Daughters: Marie (Mrs. Kenneth Brauman), Mae (Mrs. Russell Johnson), Mildred Babcock, Doris (Mrs. Eugene Ernst) Hardy, Millie (Mrs. Norman Iehl), Alice (Mrs. Mervin Hill) Humboldt.

He is also survived by 4 brothers: Ray Babcock, James Babcock, Clarion, Marion Babcock, Wilbur Babcock; 31 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one daughter.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 7, 1967 at, 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church at Eagle Grove, Iowa with the Rev. Arthur W. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
