August 10, 1825 --- September 3, 1901

One by one the pioneers are being taken from our midst. This time we are called upon to chronicle tbe death of one of Wright county's earliest settlers, Mr. John L. Middleton, who died Tuesday morning at his home in the south part of town.

Mr. Middleton had been sick but a short time, being dangerously ill only since Thursday. His ailment was a complication of diseases, which, together with his extreme age, were more than the once strong body could overcome, and death came in response to tbe call from Him who gave the life and who, no doubt, needs the spirit for a better work in his Heavenly home.

Grandpa Middleton was born in Alleghany county, Maryland, August 10, 1825. When three years of ago his parents moved to Harrison county, Ohio, and five years later to Tuscarawas county, where they remained until 1856. In 1855, one year previous to the removal of the family, Mr. Middleton became endowed with the spirit of enterprise and emigrated to Iowa and has since made his home in the Hawkeye state, being a pioneer of Wright county and one of the first residents of Eagle Grove.

In his boyhood days he learned the blacksmith trade, which trade he followed until his age forced him to retire. Yet he was never idle, and even to his last days was always busying himself, his supreme aim being to please those whom he came in contact with and for whom he was working.

The deceased was the father of seven children. The living are: Mrs. Caroline Slaikeu, Allen, John W., Mrs. Dora Gunderson and Miss Mima, to whom, together with a faithful wife and helpmate, a brother and sister and numerous grandchildren and relatives, is extended the most profound sympathy in their sorrow.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
