Death of Miss Alice Middleton
A very sad duty is ours in recording the death of Miss Alice Middleton, of Troy township, which occurred at the hospital in Independence on Friday, March the 8th, in the 39th year of her age. The deceased had been in ill health for some time, but not till the middle of December did the alarming symptoms develop which resulted in so sad and premature a termination of her life. She seemed to recover from her first attack but about the middle of January the disorder returned, and she was removed to the hospital for treatment. For a time she gave much hopes of recovery, making the end even more tragic than it would otherwise have seemed.

Miss Middleton was well known in and about Eagle Grove, and was universally beloved. She was a lady of high education, and unusual refinement. Her cheerfulness of manner, goodness of heart, love of good literature and art, appreciation of others, and tenderness in caring for those of her own home won the admiration and love of all who knew her.

Miss Middleton was the daughter of the late Jose R. Middleton. Her mother, one sister and five brothers survive her to mourn their inestimable loss. She had been an earnest christian since her fifteenth year. The Methodist church, Sunday School and Epworth League of Troy loses in her one of its most active and efficient members.

The funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church at Troy by Rev.'s Black and Benjamin on Monday, March 11th, the remains being followed to the cemetery by a throng of mourning friends, whose tributes of flowers were profuse and beautiful. Her memory will be ever fragrant.

Death of Miss Alice Middleton Accomplished of Her Own Act
Word was received in Eagle Grove Saturday morning announcing the death, at Independence, of Miss Alice Middleton. Miss Middleton, it will be remembered, was taken to Independence some time since for treatment for mental trouble. Her case was not considered aggravated nor incurable. The thought of her friends was that systematic treatment would fully restore her reason and give her a long life of usefulness, She wrote home frequently and her letters were hopeful and indicative of returning health. Only a day or so before her death one came which was especially lighthearted.

Information regarding her death is meagre, nothing being known beyond the mere fact that death came by her own hands and that hanging was the method used. The entire community will receive this message with sorrow. Miss Middleton's life promised much and that it should be cut off is indeed to be regretted. The family will have the profound sympathy in their trial and will receive the sincere condolences of all.

Another very sad case of mind failing is that of Miss Alice Middleton, who resides with her widowed mother about five miles south of Eagle Grove. Miss Middleton has always been a bright, active young lady in her home community. During the fall and winter her mother's health has been very much impaired. This condition of her mother added much worriment and anxiety to Miss Alice, who also under the excitement of a religious revival that was in progress in that neighborhood became unduly nervous, causing her mind to break down. Miss Middleton was taken to the Independence hospital for treatment, which her many friends hope will result in her complete recovery.
