February 7, 1859 –-- March 5, 1914

Mrs. Orilla J. Paine was born in Troy Township February 7, 1859, and died March 5th, 1914 at the beautiful country home three miles northwest of Eagle Grove of diphtheria after only a few days sickness. Fearing contagion of the dread disease only short funeral services were held at Rose Hill cemetery March 6th, 1914 by Rev. A. M. Wilkinson. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse.

Mrs. Paine was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Middleton and was married to D. D. Paine November 6th, 1879. She is survived by the devoted husband, five children, Mrs. Magnus Hansen, Raymond, Roger, Morris, and Paul Paine, and twelve grandchildren besides her mother, three brothers and four sisters.

In her death there has gone from us forever a lady of exalted character, one who left her impress upon all around her. From earliest childhood she manifested the genial and sunny traits of character, the goodness of heart and sweetness of disposition which drew dear friends to her throughout her entire life.

It is the duty of the living to pay the tribute of sincere respect to the worthy dead. The funeral cortege the habiliments of sorrow and the marble column marking the last resting place of those we love are proofs of personal regard for those who, have passed "behind the green curtain that never swings outward." The sympathy of friends is sweet and reminds us that "one touch of sorrow makes us all of kin" but over and above all this, there is, in the life or death of a useful man or woman a lesson that should not be lost to the community. Such a life and such, a death we chronicle today.

Being dead she yet lives, lives let us hope in the lives and character of her decendants, lives in the words she has spoken which will never be forgotten, lives in the example she set for the emulation of mankind, lives in the recollection of all to whom she ministered while on earth with a gentleness and patience that is the crowning glory of a noble woman. —Eagle.
