Marie J. Claude, daughter of Julian C. and Julie Claude, was born October 24, 1861, at Leland, Ill., the youngest of three daughters. Her parents and both sisters preceded her in death.

When she was fifteen years old she came, with her family, to Iowa and settled on a farm six miles south of Eagle Grove and this was her home until her marriage to L. B. Middleton on March 1, 1882.

Four years later, Mr. and Mrs. Middleton moved to Eagle Grove where Mr. Middleton entered the hardware and implement business, and here they have resided continuously for sixty years, except for a short time spent in Florida, Tennessee and Washington, D. C.

To their union were born six children, two of whom, Verna and Claude E., have passed on.

Sunday, March 1, 1942, surrounded by their children and their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Middleton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, an occasion of deep happiness to them.

While Mrs. Middleton had been in failing health, death came unexpectedly and she slept peacefully away Tuesday morning, May 12, 1942, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Her greatest content lay in her home although she took an active interest in the affairs of the community.

A member of the Methodist church, she had served its various groups as presiding officer.

She was a charter member and one of the first officers of Eagle Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and retained her membership to the day of her death.

She is survived by her husband, Lyman B. Middleton, by two daughters, Mrs. N. C. Rice of Algona and Mrs. Ralph Piper of Washington. D. C.; by two sons, L. W. Middleton of Waterloo and Earle Middleton of Cheyenne, Wyo.; by six grandchildren, Margaret Middleton of Des Moines, Mrs. Charles DuCharme of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Virgil Wittman of Washington, D C, Mrs. Richard Parrish of Ottumwa, Mrs. Robert Hill of Burlington, and Robert Middleton of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and by six great grandchildren.

It can truly be said of her that she "lived in deeds, not years, in thoughts, not moments, in heartbeats, not in figures on the dial."
