January 21, 1929 --- September 24, 1983

James N. Bean, 54, of Flandreau, South Dakota died Saturday in the Flandreau hospital after a four-month illness. Mr. Bean was born Jan. 21, 1929, in St. Paul, Minn. He moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, as a boy and attended high school there. He attended a junior college and then entered the Iowa State Teacher's College, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree. He married Bonnie Lindsay July 9, 1950, in Eagle Grove. He taught in Woodbine, Iowa, Sutherland, Iowa, and Wheatland, Wyo. In 1957, he joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs and taught in Belcourt, N.D., until 1967, when he started teaching at the Flandreau Indian School. He retired in August 1981. Survivors include his wife; three sons: Douglas, Lower Brule, S.D., Lawrence, Girdwood, Alaska, and William, Palmer, Alaska; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Rebecca) Nelson, Be-midji, Minn.; four grandchildren; and four sisters: Marian Arner and Barbara Akins, both of Siloam Springs, Ark., Harriet Hoot, Perry, Okla., and Margaret Piper, St. Paul. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church, Flandreau. Burial will be in the Flandreau Cemetery. Visiting hours begin this evening in the Skroch Funeral Home, Flandreau.
