Funeral services for Mrs. O. A. Young were held Friday afternoon Jan. 23rd at 2 o’clock at the family home, 220 North Iowa Ave.

Rev. Dale Brown, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated at the last rites.

Casket bearers were E. R. McGrath, Sumner Paine, Paul Anderson, Arnold Anderson, Andrew O. Anderson and Alvin F. Lohf. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Young, 97, died Wednesday, Jan. 21st at Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge where she has been a patient for a number of months.

She fell early last spring while calling on Miss Mae Platt who was ill in a downtown apartment and suffered a broken hip. She was in a Fort Dodge hospital for a short time after the broken bones were pinned and then went to Friendship Haven, to reside. About six weeks ago it was necessary to remove the pins from her hip and she had been quite ill since that time. Her daughter, Mrs. Howard Paine of Albuquerque, N. M. had been there with her this past few weeks.

Mrs. Young, the former Clara P. Filkins, was born Oct. 7, 1861 to parents John and Margaret Filkins in Vinton, Iowa. She came to Eagle Grove about 1883, after her brother D. C. Filkins, the towns first lawyer settled here in 1882. She taught school for a few years and in 1891 was married to Oscar Young. They were the parents of one daughter Margaret, Mrs. Howard Paine.

Mrs. Young was the oldest member of the Eagle Grove Congregational church, both in age and years of membership. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, P. E. O., Woman’s Club, Equality Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Always interested in community activity, she was a member of the first board of the Eagle Grove Library. Her hobby was kindliness and friendship and she was a friend to both young and old.

Always concerned about children and their activities, for the past several years, Mrs. Young presided at an open house on Halloween for the “Tricks or Treaters”. Children from all over town and also the country came to her home and Mrs. Young was the happiest when she had a large number of callers, to visit with and give treats.

Following the annual parties, Mrs. Young was the one who praised the guests, always commenting on how well behaved children were, causing her no trouble.

In addition to her daughter Mrs. Young is survived by one great granddaughter and three great grandchildren.
