AARON YEAROUS DIED MONDAY

Eagle Grove's First School Teacher Died at His Home Here Monday Morning.

Monday morning Eagle Grove citizens learned the sad news of the death of Aaron Yearous of this city. He took treatment at Iowa City without relief. He was among the earlier Wright county pioneers and was Eagle Grove’s first school teacher.

Obituary

Aaron Yearous, oldest son of Catharine and Charles Yearous, was born January 10, 1852, on his grandfather’s farm in Knox county, Ohio. When he was three years old his parents drove overland to Iowa, settling on a homestead at Highland in Clayton county. It was here that he grew to manhood. He attended an academy at Clermont, Iowa, afterwards teaching school. He graduated from the State University of Iowa with the law class of 1878 and later went to Nebraska where he settled on a homestead near Kearney, but on account of illness was compelled to return to Iowa.

In 1881 he came to Eagle Grove, being the first school teacher in the city. On Feb. 15, 1882, he was married to Lizzie Sheppard of Clayton county, and to this union were born seven children: Warren, who died in 1903; Roscoe of Cottage Grove, Oregon; Milo of Cadogan, Alberta; Esther, wife of Ralph Walster of Marble Rock, Iowa, Glenn of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; Howard of Peterson, Iowa; and a daughter who died in earliest infancy.

Mr. Yearous took part in the civic affairs of his community, having served for many years as councilman, mayor, city attorney and having been justice of the peace continuously since 1888. He was best known for a rugged uprightness and integrity of character. He was absolutely honest, truthful and clean. As a father, he was willing to forego most of the comforts and pleasure of life in order to fit his children to carry on in the world.

More than three years ago his health began to fail and in spite of the best medical sill, and the loving care of his devoted family he succumbed to diabetic gangrene, after weeks of [unreadable] suffering. Aside [unreadable] three grandchildren, seven brothers, one sister and a host of friends.

He passed away on the morning of May 14, having lived 71 years, 4 days. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church on Wednesday afternoon in charge of Rev. E. A. Anderson. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
