Mrs. Van Houten, the former, Bertha Lorena, daughter of Barne and Rebecca Thompson, was born at Jewell May 27, 1907 and moved with her parents to Woolstock in 1909. Following her father's accidental death in 1919 the family moved to Eagle Grove.

In 1925 she married Harry Hill. To this union were born 10 children who all survive her. Thelma, Mrs. Charles Bertram, Webster City; Cleo, Mrs. Floyd Powell, Cedar Rapids; Harlan Hill, Ft. Dodge; Harvey Hill, Eldora; Donald Hill, Oklahoma City; Marlene, Mrs. James Hanson, Sherman, Texas; Sharon, Mrs. Larry Brandt, Kansas City, Mo.; Lois Comstock, Goldfield, Harold Middleton, Eagle Grove, Jon Raymond Elwood, Humboldt.

She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Frank Bernard, Webster City, by two brothers, John Thompson of Kamrar and Ben Thompson of Port Orchard, Wash, and by four sisters: Ruth, Mrs. Willy Gudvangen, Fertile, Minn.; Bessie, Mrs. Robert Parrlsh, Webster City; Esther, Mrs. Maurice Goering, Duncombe and Beatrice, Mrs. Burdette Butz, Eagle Grove and by 20 grandchildren.

In 1953 she married James Van Houten of Eagle Grove who also survives her. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery
