Mathias “Matt” Mersch
29 October 1909 --- 25 August 2001

Matt Mersch, the son of John P. and Anna Besch Mersch, was born on October 29, 1909, in West Bend, Iowa. He attended school in West Bend. On February 18, 1936, he was united in marriage with Alberta E. Kemna at West Bend. They lived in Goldfield, Iowa, for six years, and then moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1942 where they farmed. He was a Fourth-Degree member of The Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens Center.

Matt Mersch died on Saturday, August 25, 2001, at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City, Iowa, at the age of 91. Survivors include his children: Bernice Bard, Lincoln, Neb., Kenneth Mersch, Eagle Grove, Paulette Loney, and husband, Dean, Marshalltown, Iowa, and Lynette Espeland, Des Moines, Iowa; three brothers, Edward Mersch, and wife, VaLane, Humboldt, Iowa, Nick Mersch, and wife, Rita, Eagle Grove, and John Mersch, and wife, Marcy, Fort Dodge, Iowa; one sister, Caroline Kemna, West Bend; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alberta, in August of 1996; infant daughter, Karen Sue Mersch; brothers, Leo, Paul, Francis, and Joseph; one sister, Margaret Anderson; and two sons-in-law, Richard Bard and Phil Espeland.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 29, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father David Beckman officiating. Burial was held in the Calvary Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
