Clayton Roscoe Claude was born February 22, 1937, in Goldfield, Iowa, to Fred and Hazel Johnson Claude. He was raised and educated in Wright County until he joined the U. S. Marines in 1954. He was stationed primarily in California for a 3-year service term. Following his discharge, he continued his residence there for a few years and was employed at Larco Painting Company. He returned to Iowa in 1960 and lived in the Goldfield area until his death.

He married Marlene Thompson of Radcliffe, Iowa, on June 30, 1961. She died in November 1989. He worked at Kallin-Johnson Monument Company for six years, then began a 31-year long career at Farmland Industries Animal Feed Plant in Eagle Grove, Iowa, as an inloader/mill operator. He married Helen Hjermstad of Fort Dodge, Iowa, in July 1997. He has been retired from Farmland since March 2000 due to ill health.

Clayton R. Claude died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at the Humboldt Care Center in Humboldt, Iowa, at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife, Helen Hjermstad-Claude, Goldfield; two sons, Major Gerald Lee Claude, Ramstein Military Base, Germany, and Captain Kelvin Ray Claude, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland; three grandchildren, three stepchildren, three brothers Albert Claude, Clarion, Richard Claude, Cache, Okla, and Glenn Claude, Vincent, Iowa; two sisters, Viola Snell, Clarion, and Maxine Clark, West Carrollton, Ohio; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marlene; and a sister, Evelyn.

Memorial services were held on Friday, January 19. 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, with Pastor Arvin Halvorson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
